Draft - pending final review.

Turbuly is a free, independent turbulence forecast tool for anxious flyers. This page honestly describes what data is collected while you use the site, what is not collected, and where that data goes.

Data we collect

Turbuly does not run a user account system. We do not ask for registration, sign-in, an email address, or payment information, because none of that is needed to provide the service.

We do not collect data that identifies you when you visit the site. The sections below explain, one by one, the analytics and browser-storage mechanisms that run while you visit.

Analytics and cookie consent

The cookie notice at the bottom of the page asks for permission to collect anonymous usage statistics with Google Analytics (GA4). If you choose "Accept," the GA4 script loads and aggregate statistics such as page views and interactions are recorded; while it runs, Google may write cookies such as _ga to your browser. If you choose "Reject," GA4 never loads and no Google cookie is created.

Your choice is stored in your browser under the name turbuly-consent and is never sent to a server. Clearing your browser storage resets the choice and the notice reappears.

GA4 never runs on preview deployments or in local development, under any circumstance; it only runs on the live site, and only once you have consented.

Vercel Web Analytics

Our hosting provider Vercel's Web Analytics feature runs on every visit and is not gated by the cookie consent choice. Vercel describes this product as cookieless; it records page-view and performance metrics in aggregate, anonymous form and does not track an individual visitor across sites. See Vercel's own privacy documentation for details.

Browser storage (localStorage)

A few features on the site store small, same-origin pieces of information in your browser. None of this is sent to a server:

  • turbuly-consent: your choice from the cookie notice (accept or reject).
  • turbuly:recheck:<route>: a coarse bucket (such as 2-3, 4-6, 7+) of how many times you re-viewed the same flight result within a short window. Only if you consented, this bucket is sent to GA4 as a single event; the raw view count is never sent.
  • turbuly:checklist:dismissed: whether you dismissed the checklist hint.
  • The turbulence game's best score: kept only in your browser, never sent anywhere.

Third parties

To run the site, we work with these providers:

  • Vercel: hosting, serverless functions, Web Analytics, and the Blob storage where we keep flight schedule and turbulence-map data. What is stored there is flight and weather data, not personal data.
  • Cloudflare: the network/CDN layer in front of the site, used for traffic security and speed.
  • Google (Analytics): only as described under "Analytics and cookie consent" above, once you consent.
  • Weather and flight data sources such as ECMWF, AviationStack, AeroDataBox, and aviationweather.gov: these supply data to us; we do not send them any visitor data.

We do not sell personal data

We do not sell personal data. We have no identifying data on hand to sell in the first place.

Your choices

You can block analytics entirely by rejecting the cookie notice. You can clear your browser storage (localStorage) to reset the local counters and preferences listed above.
